What is Pilates?

Pilates focuses on the complete range of motion of all joints, with control and precision — beginning with small movements and progressing to larger movements. Rather than isolating muscle groups, the whole body is trained, integrating the upper and lower extremities with the trunk. The result is a strong, long, lean and balanced body. Using an integrative approach to fitness and well-being, Pilates is a tremendous complement to any dance, sports and fitness training or physical rehabilitation regimen and can be tailored to any individual regardless of age, body type, or ability.

Apparatus Work:

Pilates apparatuses were engineered by “Joe” using spring resistance to help strengthen and stretch the muscles more efficiently. Regular exercise on the Pilates apparatus will attain quick results in toning the body while achieving longer, leaner muscles.

Our Pilates studio is fully equipped with:

  • Reformers
  • Cadillac/Trapeze Table
  • Towers
  • Combo/Wunda Chairs
  • Ladder Barrel
  • Spine Corrector Barrels

Mat Work

Classical Pilates is taught at Movement Studios in a series of sequential mat exercises that are performed lying, sitting, kneeling or standing on a mat. Group classes are traditionally taught without props, but the instructors may use the Magic Circle, foam roller, and/or fitness bands and balls from time to time. Such props are more common to the Contemporary Pilates training offered at Movement Studios, where essential Pilates exercises building core strength fitness are enhanced with the use of the stick, hand weights, magic circle, mini balls, and fitness bands and balls.
